How to Make Flowers Last Longer: Tips for Everyday Arrangements

There’s something special about receiving or picking up a fresh floral arrangement. The colors, the fragrance, the joy- it’s an instant mood boost. But one common question we hear at Lloyd’s Florist is: “How can I make my flowers last longer?” The good news is that with a few simple care techniques, you can extend the life of your blooms and enjoy their beauty for as long as possible.

Start with Fresh Flowers

The longevity of any arrangement starts with the flowers themselves. When you shop with a reputable florist like Lloyd’s, you can trust that your blooms are fresh, professionally handled, and well-conditioned before they even reach your home. That’s a huge advantage over supermarket or convenience store bouquets, which may already be a week old when you buy them.

Trim the Stems

One of the first things you should do after receiving flowers is give the stems a fresh cut. Use a sharp knife or floral scissors to cut about ½ inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat on the bottom of the vase, which can block water intake.

Tip: Re-cutting the stems every few days keeps them open and allows the flowers to keep hydrating.

Remove Lower Leaves

Before placing your flowers in a vase, remove any leaves that will sit below the water line. Submerged leaves decay quickly and create bacteria in the water, which can shorten the life of your flowers.

Use Clean Vases and Fresh Water

Always start with a clean vase to prevent bacteria buildup. Fill it with room-temperature water and add the flower food that comes with your bouquet. Flower food contains a mix of nutrients, a pH balancer, and antibacterial agents to help extend bloom life.

Change the water every two to three days, clean the vase thoroughly, and add new flower food each time.

Keep Them Cool and Out of Direct Sunlight

Flowers love moderate temperatures and shady spots. Place your arrangement in a cool area away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or appliances that generate heat. Extreme heat or light can cause blooms to wilt prematurely.

Pro tip: If possible, place your arrangement in the refrigerator overnight. Florists do this all the time to extend bloom life, and it can make a big difference, especially for roses, tulips, and lilies.

Remove Spent Flowers Promptly

As your arrangement ages, remove any flowers that start to wilt or turn brown. These declining blooms can produce ethylene gas, which speeds up the aging of the remaining flowers.

Special Tips for Specific Flowers

  • Hydrangeas: Dip the ends of the stems in boiling water for 30 seconds before placing them in the vase to help rehydrate them.

  • Tulips: Tulips continue to grow after being cut, so keep an eye on their height and re-trim if needed.

  • Lilies: Remove the pollen-covered stamens as soon as the flower opens to prevent staining and extend the bloom’s life.
